In case you missed this over at Businessweek, Steve McKee, author of When Growth Stalls: How It Happens, Why You’re Stuck, and What to Do About It, offers up some great reading recommendations for marketers.
Steve lists a few of my favorites including Competitive Strategy: Techniques for Analyzing Industries and Competitors, by Michael E. Porter. My love of strategy was what made this book so interesting and it’s helped me improve sales and marketing performance by being better prepared to identify and take advantage of opportunities and threats. Warning: this is not a book that many would consider a great summer book for the beach!
When you’re over on the Businessweek site, check out Brian Solis’ column entitled ROI Doesn’t Mean ‘Return on Ignorance’. If that motivates you to action, check out this post on social media strategy and this one that provides a simple to use ROI calculator.
(Hint: The ROI calculator is a great tool for start-up campaigns where you want to get everyone involved in agreeing to processes and key performance metrics. Get the key people in the room and sell them on the logic of the tool – this makes the discussion less personal and more about the tool so everyone lowers their defenses and starts working together to make the tool produce agreeable numbers. At the end of the process, everyone has agreed to performance goals that can be measured and monitored!!)
